Akureyri is a small town on the north coast of Iceland.

Money and Tipping

Iceland's currency is the Krona (ISK). Euros are widely accepted but ask first. A small tip (5-10%) is not expected but appreciated when dining in restaurants or taking a taxi.

Local Transportation

The local town is fairly small. You will need to take a tour, rent a car or hire a taxi to see sights further out.

Sights

Other than a church and botanical garden, there isn't much in Akureyri itself. Sights further out in the area include

  • Godafoss - a mini Niagara falls
  • Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles) - an area with towering lava formations
  • Namaskard Geothermal fields - a geological interesting area with boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits
  • Myvatn Nature Baths - a smaller version of the Blue Lagoon located 105km east of Akureyri https://www.myvatnnaturebaths.is/

Shopping & Restaurants

Shops are concentrated in two places, the city center along the street Hafnarstti and in the shopping mall Glerrtorg by the street Glerrgata.
