Introduction

Ashdod is Israel's busiest port and 50 miles west of Jerusalem and 25 miles south of Tel Aviv.

Where You're Docked

Cruise ships dock at Port Ashdod north of the main city. There may be shuttles to take you either to the port gate or into Ashdod.

Money and Tipping

Israel's currency is the New Israeli Shekel (NIS). US dollars and euros may be accepted at shops. The post office will exchange money without commission but you can also find money exchange counters in the old town. A 10-15% tip is expected when dining in restaurants. Taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped.

Local Transportation

To get from Ashdod to Jerusalem, you should take a taxi or a tour. Traffic can be quite congested in Jerusalem so give yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship. A taxi should cost around 280 NIS for this journey.

Sights

There isn't much to see in Ashdod. Places to see in Jerusalem include

• Wailing Wall - This ancient wall is a holy site for Jews.
• Church of the Holy sepulcher - This church is believed to contain both the rock where Jesus was crucified and his tomb.
• Via Dolorosa - The street where Jesus carried the cross is packed with souvenir shops. Along the route are the 14 stations of the cross.
• Bethlehem - Visiting Bethlehem requires crossing the border into Palestinian land. You will need your passport.

Been Here Before

Take a trip out to the Dead Sea and float in the super salty water or visit Tel Aviv, Israel's largest city.

Shopping & Restaurants

There are markets and shopping malls in Ashdod and a large duty free store at the pier.

In Jerusaleum, Via Dolorosa is lined with shops.
