Liverpool is a port city on the west coast of England and known as the birthplace for the Beatles.

Money and Tipping

England's currency is the British Pound (GBP) though England's version is called Pound Sterling. Though not expected, a small tip (5-10%) is appreciated when eating at restaurants or taking a taxi.

Local Transportation

Liverpool is fairly walkable but there is local bus service. Most sights can be found in the city center.

Sights

  • Albert Dock - this renovated warehouse area contains several attractions including the Beatles Story, Tate Liverpool, Maritime, and Slavery Museums (all three museums free), restaurants and shops.
  • Beatles Story - This attraction covers the history of the Beatles rise to fame and a recreation of the Cavern nightclub. Entry £15.95 . http://www.beatlesstory.com/ For fans, many different companies run Beatles tours.
  • Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral - A modern cathedral east of the city center.
  • Liverpool Cathedral - You can get to the top of the UK's largest cathedral partially by elevator. Tower entry £5 (Dec 2011). http://www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk
  • Cavern Quarter - Home of the Cavern nightclub where the Beatles played and other shops trying to cash in on the Beatles. The original cavern was closed though a replica now exists on the same street.

Shopping & Restaurants

Liverpool has a large pedestrian mall zone consisting of Lord, Church, Whitechapel and Paradise streets. There is a large outdoor shopping complex, Liverpool One at the bottom of Paradise St and St Johns Shopping Center is at the end of Church St. Further southeast from Liverpool One is a small Chinatown at the end of Duke St. There is a large Poundland store in St Johns.

For supermarkets, there is a Sainsbury's Local at the corner of Edmund and Old Hall St, a Tesco Express on Lord St and a larger Tesco near Liverpool One at 10 Hanover St.

Try a sausage roll at Gregg's bakery, various location including one beside Sainsbury Local (see above), off Lord St on North John St and in St John's Center.

Internet

Cafes and restaurants may provide free wifi to customers.
