Local Transportation

Since cruise ships dock beside town, you shouldn't need to use public transport. There is a hop on hop off sightseeing bus and you can take a train or bus to Taormina if you have time.

Outside of the city

Consider heading out to the more touristy town of Taormina with its Roman ampitheatre or Mount Etna. For Taormina, buses and trains depart from the main railway station frequently from Messina. The train run hourly from Messina Centrale to Taormina-Giardini and the fare is approx €4. You can check the Trenitalia website for schedules. Make sure you validate your tickets before boarding. At Taormina, you can take a local bus up the steep hill or you can walk. Castelmola perched high on a hill is directly beside Taormina.

For Mount Etna, there is a cable car that takes you almost to the top and then another 45 min hike (2.7km one way, 400m elevation gain) to reach the peak. The less mobile can take hire a 4x4 to get there. http://funiviaetna.com/en/

Shopping & Restaurants

Shops and restaurants can be found in town. Find a bakery and try some canoli (deep fried shell filled with ricota cheese). Ragusa Eventi is close to the cruise pier.
