Nassau is the capital and largest city of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

Money and Tipping

Bahama's currency is the Bahamian dollar pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. US dollars and coins are universally accepted and often mixed in with the local currency. Ask for any change back in US if possible. Restaurants typically add a 15% tip to your bill so check your bill carefully. Taxi drivers should be tipped 15% as well and rates are fixed by the government.

Local Transportation

Minibuses operate several routes from Nassau including to Cable Beach. Pay the driver $1.25 when you exit.

Sights

  • Atlantis Resort - a large resort with an impressive aquarium and water park.
  • Cable Beach - a beautiful beach fifteen minutes west of Nassau by minibus from the Straw Market.

Shopping & Restaurants

Bay Street is the main shopping street and a block away from the cruise piers. Straw Market in the middle of Bay Street has handicrafts and souvenirs.

Post Office

The General Post Office in Nassau is on East Hill Street a couple blocks south of the piers.

Internet

Cafes and restaurants may provide free wifi to customers. Festival Place Plaza directly beside the pier and McDonalds may also have wifi.
