Kauai (Nawiliwili), Hawaii

Introduction

Kauai pronounced Ka-wa-ee (Hawaiian) or Kah-why (English), is known as the garden island. Cruise itineraries refer to Nawiliwili which is the name of the harbor of the cruise pier.

Where You're Docked

Cruise ships dock at the port by the town of Lihue which is the commercial center of the island. Free shuttles may run to car rental offices, Walmart, and smaller malls from the pier. Kalapaki beach is nearby. Cruise schedule here http://hidot.hawaii.gov/harbors/passenger-cruise-schedules/

Money and Tipping

When dining in restaurants, it is customary to leave 15-20% tip for good service since servers typically make minimum wage. Taxi drivers should be tipped the same rate.

Kauai has local bus service but the best way to get around the island is to rent a car. http://www.kauai.gov/Bus

Sights

  • Poipu, on the south side is the major visitor destination for the island. Poipu features beautiful beaches and wildlife.
  • Kapaa on the east side is the most populated and anchors the Coconut Coast with resorts and strip malls.
  • The Na Pali coast was featured in Jurassic Park.

Shopping & Restaurants

Lihue has a few malls with largest being Kukui Grove Shopping Center with a Macy's, Ross Dress for Less, Long's drugstore and Times Supermarket.
