Introduction

Sihanoukville is Cambodia's main port city. It is a gateway for overland tours to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. The area's beaches are popular with both locals and tourists. Cambodia's capital of Phnom Penh is 140 miles to the northeast.

Visas

Citizens of most countries can apply for an electronic visa (e-visa) online for $25 USD. Cruise lines may process visas on arrival for a higher fee. A passport photo and an empty full blank page is required for the visa.

Where You're Docked

Cruise ships may dock at the main commercial port at the northwest corner of the city though some ships may tender.

Exchange Rates Live

Though Cambodia has it's own currency, the Riel (KHR), US dollars are the primary currency. Riels are only used for transactions less than $1. Exchange rate is 4,000 KHR = 1 USD (May 2013). ATM's dispense US currency. Try to find Canadia Bank ATM's since they do not charge an additional fee for foreign cards. Tipping is not common in Asia.

Going to Siem Reap

Siem Reap is over 300 miles away by road but Sihanoukville has a small airport with limited flights to Siem Reap. More frequent flights are available from Phnom Penh.

Local Transportation

Tuk-tuk and taxi drivers will wait by the pier. You will need to bargain for the fare to your destination.

There isn't much to see in Sihanoukville and most visitors head to the beaches or take a tour out to Phnom Penh. Visiting Ream National Park is also an option for those wanting to stay in the area.
